Avocados are the fruit of the avocado tree, which is classified as part of the flowering plant family Lauraceae and is botanically a large berry containing a single seed. The delicious and nutritious avocado is arguably one of the most popular fruits available in the produce section today due to its versatility and health benefits. From guacamole, salads, wraps, and avocado toast to a healthy fat substitute in desserts and smoothies – avocados are truly a superfood.
Avocados are low in sugar and carbohydrates and are considered to be a superfruit due to their abundance of vitamins and minerals.

They are a source of vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin E, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, potassium, and fiber, among others. While avocados are higher in fat, they contain monounsaturated fat, which is considered to be “good” fat.

TROPICAL AVOCADOS

Tropical avocados have become popular for a slightly lower fat content than Hass avocados and have a lighter, sturdier, fresher texture to them. That makes them ideal for slicing and dicing and an excellent topping for sandwiches, wraps, and salads. Compared to Hass variety avocados, Tropical Avocados are 3x bigger, bright green, and have smooth, shiny skin. Fresh and creamy, Tropical Avocados have a sturdier texture and slightly lighter flavor than other avocados. They are great sliced, diced, and cut into chunks where they can stand out as the main ingredient—such as salads, sandwiches, wraps, and avocado toast.

HAAS AVOCADOS

The Hass avocado is one of the most delicious and popular varieties of avocados on the market today. It is easily recognizable by its creamy flesh, superior taste, and bumpy thick skin which turns nearly black when fully ripe.

Hass avocados were first grown by mail carrier and amateur horticulturist Rudolph Hass in the mid-1920s in California, USA. Rudolph Hass at 33 years old and earning 25 cents (USA( an hour as a mail carrier in Pasadena had a dream of growing a better avocado. He took every dollar he had saved along with a loan from his sister and purchased a one-and-a-half-acre plot of land. He grafted and patented the Hass avocado under his name in 1935. Today, though hundreds of types of avocados exist, the most popular type is the Hass avocado.
